President Trump’s New Policy Requires Visa Applicants to Submit Social Media Details

The U.S. Government is making major changes as it relates to its process of visa applications by foreigners. Under a new State Department policy, visa applicants to the U.S. will need to submit their social media usernames, email addresses, and phone numbers. The policy took effect on Friday, and almost 15 million visa applicants are expected to be impacted by the policy change. The Huffington Post reports that a State Department official told CNN that the new policy was borne from a memorandum issued by President Donald Trump in 2017, which called for the development of a “uniform baseline for screening and vetting standards and procedures.” Critics of the policy have described it as a “dangerous and problematic proposal.” Only applicants for certain diplomatic and official visa types will be exempted from this requirement.
