Junior and senior songwriters and singers in both Belize and Carnival Song categories are asked to log on to its website and submit their music and get a chance to win some of the thirty thousand dollars in prizes.  Communications Officer Neil Hall spoke to News Five about the rules of the national song competition, which takes place this year in Corozal.

“As you know, we’ve done a tour of the national song competition making sure it is truly a national event. Last year we were in Santa Elena, the year before we were in Dangriga and this year, we are going all the way up north. We are going to visit Corozal Town and we are excited about it. They are separated in two parts: the seniors who are eighteen years and older or the juniors who are seventeen years and younger. And in those two sections, you then have the national song that shares a vibe about Belize. A desire, a longing, a prayer for, a hope for, but just a thoroughly Belizean feel to it. Then we also have the carnival song which is going to be pumping throughout the September celebrations and has that energy, has that charisma and has that charm that just makes you smile and want to do something. We also have prizes. The prize total is above thirty thousand dollars this year and it will comprise of the first place and runner up for each category, which is for the seniors ten thousand dollars and for the junior three thousand five hundred dollars as first place. And then we also have the breakout artist for event and we have our people’s choice. It is very important that people understand the people’s choice. You go online and vote for your artist. You can vote for more than one artist, however, you cannot vote for the same artist more than once.”

The deadline for submissions is July twelfth and the performances and finals take place on August tenth.
