Marshal Nunez Mourns Excelsior’s Loss

Marshal Nunez

Former teacher and mainstay at Excelsior, Marshal Nunez, also visited the campus this morning to lend moral support to the mourning students.  He has been around the school for the past thirty years and quickly befriended Andrewin when she took the job as acting principal several months ago.

Marshal Nunez, Former Board Member, Excelsior

“It’s really a sad time and I come because even though not officially a member of this school, I feel a part of the family and when the family grieves we all grieve and so I come here to see if I can be or provide any kind of moral support in any way, shape or form.  I got to know Ms. Andrewin the first day she came to work at this institution.  [She’s] very dedicated, very committed, she means a lot to the students and to the institution.  She had thoughts about vision for this institution and now she won’t be here to see those visions through.”

“I know that in the short time she was here, again, as you mentioned, her vision was to turn around the image, as well as the performance of Excelsior.  In interacting with her, what can you tell us about her trying to realize that dream?”

Marshal Nunez

“For us to have a greater appreciation for what people do, the people who come here and work here, they first have to fall in love with this institution.  It’s a unique institution as you will know.  The students who come here, the agents of this school are people who come from backgrounds that are not the cream of the crop, if you will, and so whenever you set foot here Isani, you first find empathy for the students, you fall in love with the students, you fall in love with the institution, you fall in love with what you do and there is always that lingering ambition in your heart and in your mind and then later in your actions to try and make this institution better.  And so it’s a tremendous loss for the institution with Ms. Andrewin.”
