More Patrols to Stem Increase in Armed Robberies

Chester Williams

The spate of armed robberies across the country has seen a ramping up of police patrols in several municipalities.  Notwithstanding the efforts of the police department, home invasions and burglaries are also on the rise.  During the press brief today, Commissioner Williams took umbrage to a release issued by the Belize National Teachers Union asking the department to do its job.  He also spoke about the efforts to curb crime across the country.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“The truth is we have been doing a lot of operations that’s why I really and truly took offense to people telling the police to do their work because for sure some of them who tell us to do our work, wouldn’t want to do our work for even a minute.  Many of our officers work long tireless hours and we don’t get overtime pay but our officers are committed and dedicated and they’re out there and when they want to insinuate that we are not working, I take it as an insult to the hard working men and women of the Belize Police Department.  We continue to be as effective as we can in both the commercial areas, as well as the residential areas, but you know that sometimes when it comes to commercial, people have stores all over the place.  It’s not like we have proper zoning where you can say this dah commercial area and that dah residential area; no. It is a mix. And so yes there are some commercial areas like the one in Dangriga; I think it was on the highway, out of town. The police do spend a lot of time within the towns and I have also directed that each of the districts must have what is called a rural patrol. And the rural patrol is to ensure that they go and do patrols even in the villages.”
