Former DHS Augustina Elijio is Stabbed by a Mental Health Patient

Augustina Elijio

Just after four this evening, there was an attack on an employee at the Port Loyola Health Centre on Faber’s Road. Matron Augustina Elijio, who retired in December from her post as the Deputy Director of Health Services, was stabbed to the abdomen and the chest by a patient she had treated earlier in the day. About two weeks ago, Elijio was contracted by the Ministry of Health as the psychiatric nurse practitioner at the healthcare facility. Earlier today, she provided services to a male patient, whose name is being withheld at this time. He returned this afternoon, locked his bicycle in the designated area outside the building and went to see the nurse again. This time, we are told, he was visibly agitated and within minutes, he pulled out a knife and stabbed Elijio multiple times. Security guards on the compound responded quickly to detain the assailant, as Elijio was soon after rushed to the hospital for medical attention. News Five spoke with the head nurse at closing time today and this is what she had to say.

Voice of: Head Nurse, Port Loyola Health Centre

“We heard a commotion and then everybody was running to the back. And when we went to the back, we saw one of our colleagues sitting and holding her side and then we found out that a patient, who was here during the day, came back for whatever reason and he inflicted the wound to our colleague.”

“Did she complain at any point that her life was threatened or that anybody wanted to do her harm?”

Voice of: Head Nurse

“Apparently the patient was displaying some kind of behaviour or movement and the security was called to the back by the attendant. And as the security turned his back, the guy went and do what…you know.”

Duane Moody

“So he came back with a knife?”

Voice of: Head Nurse

“He had his own knife. It is not a knife from our building or kitchen; he come with his own knife.”

Duane Moody

“After that happened, what happened next?”

Voice of: Head Nurse

“Well the person run up into the security because then everybody start to scream out. Then we have two main door—ne dah front and one dah back and he was coming to the back door and then the security was right there and they hodl ahn down and handcuffed him and the police came.”

“Well yo know, we neva expect it. This reach home now. We never expect this because it coulda mi be anyone of us. It coulda mi be anyone of us because dah neva somebody weh aggressive or anything; just walking up and down. Ih coulda mi be, like I said, anyone of us.”
