Gerald Henry is Elected as New President of the P.S.U.

Gerald Henry is the new president of the Public Service Union.  He defeated former president Dareth Obermayer by more than one hundred and thirty votes.  The P.S.U. held its ninety-seventh annual general meeting in Dangriga Town under the theme, “P.S.U. – Organized for Public Office Empowerment, Employment Security and Increase Public Services.” Three hundred and fifty-three members participated and of that number, two hundred and nine voted for Henry to become president. Sixty-seven persons voted for Obermayor while eighteen members voted for Englebert Emmanuel.  Attorney Jacquelyn Willoughby was voted as second vice president with one hundred and thirty-four votes.  Trisha Perez is the P.S.U.’s Secretary General and she received two hundred and twenty-one votes.  Days prior to the A.G.M., a release was issued which stated that a plan of action would be tabled at the A.G.M. with respect to seeking the membership’s final approval of its draft strategy for a Hilltop settlement.  As we reported, discussions between the P.S.U. and the Belmopan City Council have been put on halt. The P.S.U. wants its headquarters returned and the issue settled.  Last month, Obermayor led a small demonstration in front of the city council with the intent to engage in a series of industrial actions.  With a new president in place, will the P.S.U. pursue this matter? That is what we asked Henry.

On the Phone: Gerald Henry, President, P.S.U.

“First of all I need to find out from the legal persons that we have looking into the case whether we have a legal standing in terms of getting back the property. If we do not have that then I don’t think that we should go ahead and invest any resources into that. The next options would be to get another property and building on it or purchase an existing structure and then see if it meets our needs and if it doesn’t then we just make the changes that we need. But certainly the case with the City Council, I need to get properly updated on that first.”

“I believe that Ms. Doreth through a press release threatened more industrial actions against the city council if that issue isn’t fix soon, do you believe that under your leadership there will further actions against the city council?”

“Well like I said it depends on what the legal personnel are saying. I don’t see us really making any such moves until we know exactly our position is legal. It does not make sense for us to be making an issue over it if it is something beyond us. We just move on from there because we have a lot of different issues that we need to address and spending a lot of time with that one particular issue, I don’t see that it requires for us at this point in time.”
