Valley of Peace Teen Drowns

Joseph Myvett

A teenager drowned over the weekend in the Valley of Peace Community out west. On Saturday afternoon, a group of friends was socializing near the bank of the Belize River when Carlos Reyes leapt into the river. He did not resurface and minutes later a friend went diving for him. His body was retrieved and taken to the Western Regional Hospital where it awaits a post-mortem exam. ACP Joseph Myvett says that the men were drinking, but the autopsy will determine the cause of death.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“Police were called to the reservoir area in the river of Valley of Peace where they observed the lifeless body of a Hispanic male, later identified as Carlos Reyes, eighteen years. What we know so far is that Reyes along with four other persons were socializing on the river bank when suddenly Reyes got up and jumped head first into the river. After he did not resurface a couple minutes later, one of his friends then jumped where he was observed motionless on the river bed and he was retrieved and brought to the shore where upon arrival the scene was processed by the police before the body was removed and transported to the western regional hospital morgue where it was pronounced dead.”
