Peace Movement Wants You to Funds its Legal Challenge of the Special Agreement

In the wake of a resounding “YES” by Belizeans at the May eighth referendum, the People’s United Party withdrew its legal challenge to the Special Agreement and the I.C.J. referendum. But it appears that the battle in court will rage on because the Belize PEACE Movement says it is taking up the legal challenge on behalf of the Belizean people. In a release issued today, the non-political organization says that following its first national planning meeting over the weekend, it acknowledges the I.C.J. referendum as relegating Belize to a “disputed territory.”  The BPM says, “it stands firm in its conviction that the Special Agreement is null and void since it tramples upon the Belize Constitution.” But for the organization to pursue its legal challenge, it needs funding and as such has launched a “Good Governance Legal Defence Fund.” BPM says it is in negotiations with a law firm from the Caribbean that specializes in constitutional and public law and so it is calling on all patriotic Belizeans, especially those in the diaspora and those who voted NO to support the fund.
