Michael Peyrefitte Not Interested in U.D.P. Leadership, at this Time

Michael Peyrefitte

Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte lost his bid to represent Port Loyola for the U.D.P. in the upcoming general elections. Peyrefitte was defeated by former Belize City councilor Philip Willoughby. Prime Minister Dean Barrow expressed disappointment in Peyrefitte’s loss, saying that Peyrefitte’s elevation to the House would have been an appropriate promotion given his performance in the Senate. It was in September of last year that the mention of a dark horse was made by U.D.P. Minister Wilfred ‘Sedi’ Elrington, who told the media that there is a third person who wants to lead the U.D.P.  Many believe that the dark horse is Michael Peyrefitte, but today the Attorney General told the media that he is not interested in the leadership position. Well, not at this time.

“The United Democratic Party’s constitution says that any member of the national assembly can apply to be the leader of the party. I am a member of the National Assembly but so is Senator Macario Coy. If he puts his name forward I will support him.”

“But I am asking about you specifically, not about Senator Coy.”

“I have no intention at this time, but as you know a short time in real life is a long time in politics. So I won’t say never but at this time I am very much focused on amending the Maritime Areas Act to help us go to the I.C.J.  I am very much interested to do what I can to improve Vital Stats even more, companies registry, BELIPO. We are a huge ministry. We are not even talking about the United Nation Convention Against Corruption. My plate is full but I will never say never when it comes to politics.”
