Bus, Taxi Operators Hopeful That Issues Will be Addressed

Mark Humes

Speaking of behalf of operators was Chairman of the Bus Terminal Market Square Taxi Cooperative Mark Humes and President of the Belize Bus Association Thomas Shaw. Both men said that they hope that what was discussed today comes to fruition in order to passively address the concerns raised.

“Part of that proposal in that meeting which he accepted in principal was that, yes we are part of Central America and the Mundo Maya corridor so if somebody is coming from Mexico going through to Honduras and going through the western border then they go through with a manifest. If they have twenty people at the Corozal border, when they get to the western border they have twenty people and they keep going through. We don’t have any problem with that and vice verse. So that also should be facilitated because we are a part of that corridor. So that could easily be worked out, I believe.”

“The sentiments from my operators were that these buses were allowed to come into the country, go into the terminals, selling tickets for all the districts. They are actually going to Fort Street here and the water taxi and our buses are not allowed to go into Guatemala. I told my operators that I am tired of all the fighting. It is time for us to do things, not in a problematic way, but I believe in diplomacy. I believe in dialoguing. I must say that I can see the way forward. I hope that what we discussed here today won’t fall on deaf ears and months down the road we will be seeing much more progress in terms of our transportation industry.”
