Providing shelter for citizens who need it is not an unusual occurrence but it’s still nice to get a look at the grateful tenants. Today, the keys were distributed in an area usually considered part of the affluent side of town…Caribbean Shores. But as News Five’s Jacqueline Woods discovered, parts of the city’s north side are not all that different from the south.

The past twelve years have not been an easy time for Lorna Moss and her five children. The family has been living in deplorable conditions on Kelly Street in the Caribbean Shores Division.

“Everytime it rains the floors usually floods and water gets in the house. And we have to clean and clean and wash it out every time it rains.”

Today things are looking a lot better for Moss and five other families in the neighbourhood. Moss is the recipient of one of the units in an apartment complex constructed under an initiative by the area representative, Jose Coye.

“You can sense the poverty around here; it’s physically present. And certainly, the way we need to address it, is to create opportunities. Housing is certainly one, of course with health and education, we consider them to be major along with creating skills among the people. But housing will play a major role in assisting the change in the air for the betterment of the people in this area.”

The families are expected to move into the complex over the next couple of days. Before handing over the keys, officials encouraged the families to do their part and help create and cleaner neighbourhood. Reporting for News 5, Jacqueline Woods.

The building was constructed by Lopez Construction company at the cost of one hundred and thirty thousand dollars. Rents vary depending on the size of the apartment and range from one hundred and seventy-five to two hundred and fifty dollars per month. The new tenants previously lived in the neighbourhood.
