Much Ado About Nothing Says the P.U.P. About a Letter to Standard Bearers

A letter to standard bearers by P.U.P. leader John Briceño has been getting maximum publicity on social media and other sectors. In the letter, following the Easter holidays, Briceño states that P.U.P. has sought to work with the government on the issue of the I.C.J., but those attempts have not had any success. In this context, Briceño instructs standard bearers to get ready for the May eighth referendum and to activate their machinery to come out and vote NO, which is in line with the position of the party.  Briceño states “In addition to the legal issues, we still  have thousands of   Belizeans  being kept off   the  voter register, there are still  many loose ends with respect  to the  management  of the referendum by the Election and Boundaries Department, the one-sided nature of the education campaign has still not been addressed and issues like the repeal or replacement of the Maritime Areas Act along with those other issues set out in the People’s Declaration have not been met.” Briceño mentions that because of this and other matters, the P.U.P. is encouraging voters to vote NO.  As we said, Briceño’s letter has been circulated widely. This evening, a spokesperson for the P.U.P. said that the position is already known publicly and is well outlined in the People’s Declaration. According to the P.U.P., there is nothing secret or new, but mischief is at hand in the dissemination of the letter by operatives of the U.D.P. since the party’s position is known to be NO and has not changed. Getting machineries in a state of readiness is a standard practice at any election.
