A Man is Ran Over and Killed on Easter Sunday in Belize City

George Baptist

There were three fatal accidents over the extend weekend. In Belize City, George Baptist was well-known to commuters who use the Novelo Bus terminal. But on Sunday afternoon, the handyman met an untimely death. In between tending to clients, Baptist went to a nearby restaurant where something went wrong inside.  A witness says Baptist was ejected from the establishment and as he fell to the ground, a vehicle drove up, ran over him and dragged him up East Collet Canal. Persons in the immediate vicinity had to pull him from under the vehicle, but he succumbed while receiving treatment.  News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

A familiar face at Novelo’s Bus Terminal and the adjacent Michael Finnegan Market, George Baptist was always willing to lend a hand to a passenger or a bargain hunter for a small fee.  With the little he made from those odd jobs, Baptist would buy himself a drink from a nearby restaurant.  Sunday afternoon was no different, until he was reportedly shoved out of the establishment and into oncoming vehicular traffic.

“What we know is that the individual was inside a restaurant and then when he came out, a vehicle came and hit him on his way out…  The driver claimed not to have realized that he had hit the person.”

So what could have happened inside the restaurant that resulted in Baptist being ejected in such violent manner?  That question is yet to be answered.  What we do know is that Baptist may have been intoxicated and the force of the blow left him dazed on the pavement.
