Mexican Embassy: “No Special Permit Issued to Pass into Mexico without a Passport”

Maria Fernanda Garrido

If you are travelling across the northern border into Mexico, whether to head to Chetumal, Cancun or Playa Del Carmen for the extended weekend, official travel documents remain the same. So you must present a valid Belizean passport or the Mexican card to enter into that country. A publication recently surfaced online from a Mexican media house which suggested that during the Easter break, Belizean visitors would be able to travel into Quintana Roo without any legal document, namely a passport. Today, we contacted the Mexican Embassy in Belize and Maria Fernanda Garrido confirmed that no such advisory was issued by the Mexican Immigration Authorities.

On the Phone: Maria Fernanda Garrido, Officer in Charge, Economic Trade & Tourism Section, Mexican Embassy in Belize

“We saw some information in an newspaper in Chetumal. Apparently somebody from the Chamber of Commerce of Chetumal said that for this holiday period, Belizeans could cross to Mexico without any passport. At the embassy we tried to contact immediately the authorities in Chetumal, the immigration authorities and they haven’t given any information to confirm this. So far the embassy doesn’t have any official information about this special permit to pass Mexico without a passport. We don’t have any information about that.”
