More Mistakes Pointed Out in Referendum Bill

Eamon Courtenay

Another error in dates, as highlighted by Senator Courtenay, has to do with the coming into force of the I.C.J.   The drafters of the bill also bungled the date when the judicial arm of the United Nations came into operation.

Eamon Courtenay, Lead P.U.P. Senator

“We are looking like idiots to the international community when you put in a law that a Senate ratified a treaty.  But it is worst than that, the International Court of Justice means the principal judicial organ of the United Nations established by the Charter of the United Nations on June 26th, 1945.  The charter, Mr. President, was signed on June 26th, 1945 but it didn’t come into force until October 24th, 1945.  So when the international community looks at this they will say, so Belize never knew when this court really came into force?  Not in June, but in October.  These little mistakes, Mr. Leader of Government Business, you use to be the person who stood in this Senate repeatedly and corrected mistakes that were brought to the Senate.  There should be no difference today.  It is embarrassing to us to be given a bill like this for consideration and I say we should correct it, correct it before approving it.  Don’t send it to the Governor General like this and ask him to assent to it.”
