American Ex-pat Roughed up by Customs in PG?

Guillermo Ortiz

So how did a customs officer get involved in an issue that appears to be an immigration offense?  Those details will be made clear following a pending investigation.  Similarly, why would a customs officer threaten to expel anyone for illegal entry?  Isn’t that the jurisdiction of the Immigration and Nationality Department?  News Five also contacted attorney Hurl Hamilton this evening who informed us that he was never retained to represent Ortiz, despite his name being mentioned during the incident.  We understand that Ortiz was later represented by attorney Emerita Anderson, who reserved comment until after she has spoken with her client.  Here’s more of the recorded exchange between the two men.

Guillermo Ortiz, Retired U.S. Veteran

“I did everything you asked me to do.”

Shaneka

“I have nothing else to say to you.”

Guillermo Ortiz

“I complied with everything you asked me to do.”

Shaneka

“Weh ih passport.”

William

“Ih deh right up deh.”

Guillermo Ortiz

“Look, di stamp that’s in my passport, when you asked me to go to Guatemala and come back the same day, I did it, didn’t I?”

Guillermo Ortiz

“I don’t feel like I’m better than anybody.”

Elmer Torres

“Yes.”

Guillermo Ortiz

“No, I don’t.”

Elmer Torres

“You feel like you’re better than everybody around here.”

Guillermo Ortiz

“I didn’t do anything to anybody.”

Elmer Torres

“Disrespecting me over and over and I am trying to help you.  Over and over I give you break.”

Guillermo Ortiz

“You keep accusing me of all these things, that I am trying to stall with the RV and I am not mein.”

Elmer Torres

“You were stalling mein, you want an attorney to call me and tell me wait until tomorrow.  You’re leaving today.  You’re not leaving no tomorrow, you’re leaving midday.”

Guillermo Ortiz

“Nobody ever told me anything about leaving when they came over, they just said somebody wants to talk to me.”

Elmer Torres

“Nobody needs to tell you that.  You are not the law here.  We are the law.”

We’ll continue to follow this story.
