Attorney General Questions Figures Stated by Chief Elections Officer

Michael Peyrefitte

In February, Chief Elections Officer Josephine Tamai appeared on this station’s Open Your Eyes to discuss the re-registration process ahead what should have been the April tenth I.C.J. referendum. During her time on the show, Tamai spoke about the two thousand electors who were placed on the disallowed list for failing to meet the requirements for re-registration. These two thousand plus individual were reportedly disallowed due to documents that are missing at the Vital Statistic Unit. Those who have been disallowed complained that they have been disenfranchised and on Monday U.D.P. Senator Michael Peyrefitte took issue with the figures reported. Here are snippets from both on the issue.

“I am surprised but maybe somebody will bring up the twenty five hundred people who have been disenfranchised. The Leader of the Opposition says now that it is three thousand. Just like the emails, we don’t know where those figures come from; we don’t know where the information comes from. It sounds like a nice round figure right?”

As it stands now we have a little bit over two thousand five hundred persons who we still cannot verify due to documents. It’s not a whole lot of persons and if those persons are out there and they have their documentation, even though those persons have been disallowed, they can come back in with their documentation.”
