Disallowed Voters in Burrell Boom Can Apply

Josephine Tamai

In March, News Five brought you the story of several Belizeans who were disallowed to vote because they did not meet the qualifications as a citizen of Belize. Now, for Burrell Boom natives Selvin Segura Sr., Jennifer Baptist and countless others, being told that they were disallowed because they did not meet the requirements as a born Belizean, was beyond disrespectful. Chief Elections Officer Josephine Tamai was asked about it on Monday.

“Probably those persons were disallowed and like I said, it is unfortunate that maybe those were not brought to my attention in terms of these persons. All those matters that have been brought to my attention I ensure that an investigation is being conducted to ensure that persons are not disenfranchised. So I would hope I would get more details about that so we can do an investigation because my job is to ensure that my officers are doing the right thing and allow Belizeans who are eligible to vote they need to have that right. Based on information that is presented to us we could see how that matter could be treated because we are presently still in the stage that yes applications have already been closed for this specific cycle but for each cycle you go an make correction and do amendments as you go along.”
