Attorney Andrew Bennett Still Fighting Extradition

Andrew Bennett

Attorney Andrew Bennett’s fight to stay in Belize continues. Bennett, who is fighting an extradition request from the U.S. Government, appeared on Monday before Chief Magistrate Sharon Frazer. The first hearing, however, was adjourned to April thirtieth. The Chief Magistrate explained that since the crown counsel who was prosecuting the case was transferred to another government department, the new prosecutor would need time to review and study the case details. Bennett is accused of money laundering in Puerto Rico. It is alleged that he played a part in setting up a money laundering business with the assistance of local high-level bankers and politicians on behalf of drug trafficking organizations since November 2013. Special agent Joseph Pelz from the Drug Enforcement Agency claims to have had face-to-face and telephone conversations with Bennett. He alleges that two hundred and fifty thousand U.S. dollars were handed to Bennett who took it to Sling Shot, an advertising company in Belize City. In his affidavit, Pelz claims that he gave Bennett information on where the money was to be laundered. He said that the monies were wired to those companies. Bennett is being represented by Attorney Anthony Sylvestre and crown is now being represented by Samantha Matute-Tucker.
