Boca Del Rio Beach and Park Upgraded

The Ministry of Tourism, Belize Tourism Board and the San Pedro Town Council inaugurated the Boca Del Rio Beach and Park this weekend.  A beachfront was reclaimed along with the construction of a swimming area and the sea wall was reinforced. These developments are all a part of the B.T.B.’s plan to develop and enhance the attractions and amenities in key tourism destinations in Belize. Reporter Andrea Polanco tells us more in the following story.

The San Pedro Town Council and the Belize Tourism Board officially re-opened the Boca Del Rio Beach and Park on Sunday. The public space was under rehabilitation for three months where the beach front was reclaimed, a swimming area was demarcated and basketball court was refurbished. Minister of Tourism Manuel Heredia shares details of the project.

“The project entailed the reclamation of one hundred by three hundred and seventy feet of the beach front; construction of a hundred by hundred feet swimming area; construction of a sea wall; installation of signage. Furthermore, the project will also stimulate other opportunities such as the addition of amenities, such as beach umbrellas, tables and chairs.”

According to the Ministry of Tourism, the project is in line with the Tourism Master Plan to invest in and develop Belize’s “sun and beach” product. The public space is popular with locals and tourists alike.

“Situated at the mouth of the river, Boca Del Rio separates the main town of Ambergris Caye by a channel popular among swimmers and beach lovers due to its crystal clear water. Boca Del Rio has always been a wonderful spot for visitors, family recreation and relaxation.”

Daniel Guerrero, Mayor, San Pedro

“Our children and families will be able to better enjoy this open space. The Council is in the process of securing personnel that will ensure that this park is child and family friendly. We want that those who use this park and all the fixtures available do so without having any problems.”

Mayor Danny Guerrero says that over the last several years coastal erosion washed away the beachfront –but this project and future works will help to restore the beaches in Boca Del Rio.

“This park, like other portions of our beaches, has been seriously compromised by the haphazard and unsustainable development and climate change. We are happy that mitigation measures are being put in place to de-accelerate the serious erosion that is impacting our beaches. We hope that the second phase will help us to recover other portions of phase two which is the beachfront going south.”
