Pastor Rocke Picks Sense Out of Nonsense

Ashley Rocke

While there were various reasons given by the senators on why to or not to support the new referendum bill, Senator Ashley Rocke gave his perspective on behalf of the churches. Here is what he had to say.

Ashley Rocke, Church Senator

“We’ve also said that the next problem seems to be re-registration.  There is clearly discomfort about the whole re-registration process, but we need to be careful.  Someone said be careful what we ask for, for we might just get it and when we get it, the reality is we must just learn to live with it.  The thing is, at the end of the day, the people will decide.  The reality is that we need a vehicle in order to get to the referendum.  It sounds to us that the vehicle that has been proposed today has the ability to do so.  Keenly Mr. President, to the senator speaking on the dates, Senator Courtenay speaking on the dates of the different processes that took place.  Now again, when I listen to the House of Representatives meeting there were lawyers there as well, on both sides of the House.  Why is it that nobody picked up on that, on those dates?  Why is it that nobody spoke about those dates?  Not this side nor that side, why did not nobody spoke of those dates?  Now I have not been sent here to quarrel with anybody, but we need to talk truth because the truth sets us free.  If we can find a way to fix the re-registration process to not disenfranchise people, I think that would be a good way to go.  Those people who really want to take part in elections or in the referendum process, that they would be allowed to do so. Now earlier I said that I felt that the statement that was made in the house on Friday said infamous Pastor Rocke.  I want you all to know that I don‘t come here to support any special group but to listen and to pick sense out of nonsense.”

So it ended in the senate: eight in favour, four no’s and one abstention.
