An Altercation Escalates into a Shooting in Hopkins

Alejandro Cowo

There was gun violence over the weekend in Belize City, Ladyville and Hopkins. The most recent occurred just after twelve this morning in the southern village of Hopkins. Jessie Cal is tonight recovering at the Southern Regional Hospital after he was shot near the cut-off to the village on the Southern Highway. The twenty-five-year-old Toledo resident was travelling in a vehicle with a friend when two men opened fire at them when they drove up to the intersection. Police say that the gun violence was the result of an altercation at a bar in the village earlier that night.

“Just at about eleven, Jessie Cal and another friend were socializing in Hopkins Village when they got into an altercation with a group of male persons. To avoid any further confrontation, they drove towards their home address and whilst approaching the intersection with Hopkins Road and the Southern Highway, they observed two male persons on the street side attempting to stop them. They did not stop and that is when the two persons fired shots at their vehicle injuring Jessie Cal. Jessie Cal was brought to the hospital and is being admitted in a stable condition.”
