P.U.P.’s Cordel Hyde Breaks it Down for the People

Cordel Hyde

Also weighing in on the heated debated today was the very vocal Lake Independence Area Representative, Cordel Hyde. Hyde, in responding to the tabling of the bill, broke down the opposition’s concerns to the common person on the street. Part of his presentation focused on the risks associated with taking the case before the I.C.J.

Cordel Hyde, Area Representative, Lake Independence

“You cannot be sure what will happen. You will win some. You will lose some.  The problem we have is that if we go to the I.C.J. where we want to outsource our power, if we go to the I.C.J. and they get it wrong, we cannot appeal. Their judgment will be final and binding and that is the danger herein. But they don’t want to admit that. They want to pretend as if though we go there it is ironclad. There is no such thing as any ironclad case. If you have an ironclad case you will never reach court because nobody will challenge you. That is the problem we have. And on the matter of the Special Agreement, let me say this. Under the laws of Belize, the people of Belize have veto over any final proposed settlement with Guatemala. The people of Belize will get to say yay or nay if we stick to the laws of Belize. Under the Special agreement, we are outsourcing that power to fifteen foreign judges that don’t know us from Adam. Everything that Guatemala wants, Guatemala gets. Guatemala wants to change the date how many times, two times? Three times? And we agree. They said that they want to go on their own they don’t want to wait on us and we agreed. They said that they want us to get rid of our threshold in our referendum act – they said that enuh. And we comply. Everything they want, we comply. So, why we cyaa just tell deh bredda just hold it down that we gwein dah referendum when we good and ready. Everything weh deh want deh get. And we are saying, hold it down, man. How we cyaa say that to Guatemala. Fi unu constituents dah Belizeans, enuh. Nuh Guatemalans. Dah Belizeans unu have to account to.”
