P.U.P. Bashes Joint Statement from Friends of Belize Group

On Thursday the European Union, the United States of America and the United Kingdom fired off a joint press release in which it voiced its support of holding a referendum. The release said that the “the referendum process is the route towards a peaceful dispute resolution agreed upon jointly by Belize and Guatemala.” The three influential and powerful entities say that they hope that the legal obstacles preventing the referendum from being held can be resolved in accordance with Belize’s legal procedures. And like almost every other issue, the U.D.P. and P.U.P. have different views. Parliamentarians from both sides shared their thoughts on this statement known today.

John Briceño

“The British is trying to advise us about holding a referendum? The British? Aren’t they have something called Brexit. After the referendum has gone to parliament at least three times and they cannot get it through because they can’t plan it properly. We are doing a favor to the Government, Madam Speaker. We are helping them because we want to avoid a Brexit situation. That is why we have been saying bring the Special Agreement to the House for us to have a full debate.”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“They saw it as a way of trying now to feed the starved maul of those dying of the enforced hunger of the inability to live off the public purse these eleven long years. They saw it as an opportunity of wetting their beaks, wetting the beaks and slaking the thirst of those parched by their deserved banishment to the political desert. And so the campaign began, a campaign in which as I said Madam Speaker they would stop at nothing to delay and ultimately the people of Belize what even the international community. I saw that last night. The international community Madam Speaker; the E.U. The U.K. and the U.S. have formally declared to be the inalienable democratic right of our citizens to  vote in a special agreement referendum.”

Cordel Hyde

Cordel Hyde, Area Rep., Lake Independence

“Today only confirmed to me when the three big boys send out a release, a joint statement. I can’t believe the Prime Minister came here to use it as a plug for him. That is a negative brother. They just made the whole world know that they can meddle in little independent Belize’s affairs how they want when they want. Why is that? Because we took their money brother and once you take their money they will tell you what to do. Do you understand? We didn’t have to take their money. This is one point two million dollar budget. We don’t have to beg for any money. We are supposed to pay for our own education campaign. We are an independent country.”

In Switzerland, the Supreme Court overturned a nationwide referendum for the first time in the country’s modern history, on the grounds that the information given to voters was insufficient. According to online articles, ‘the court said incomplete detail and a lack of transparency had violated the freedom of the vote, as it relates to the country’s proposed tax laws.
