Belize International Film Festival Calls for Submissions

Suzette Zayden

The Belize International Film Festival will be held in November of this year and this week they opened the call for film makers to submit their film to participate in the showcase. Today, Director of the Film and Media Arts Unit of the Institute of Creative Arts Suzette Zayden issued a call for entries for submissions by local and international filmmakers. While the festival is open to filmmakers across the world, Belizeans now have a new category called branded entertainment for which they can submit their work. This new segment and the popular music video category are the two categories exclusively for Belizean filmmakers. Here’s more from Zayden.

“There are areas that are open to anyone from anywhere in the world to submit; that would be the feature fiction or feature narrative; the documentary both over sixty minutes and under sixty minutes; short narrative film which are fifteen minutes and under. Belizeans can submit in those categories as well. There are two categories that are specifically for Belize and that would be, one, the music video which must be directed by a Belizean national and the artist featured has to be a Belizean artist and it must be filmed completed in Belize. This year, we have a second category that is only for Belize as well and it is called branded entertainment. A few years we have been getting a few films that are about one to three minutes long and they show the talent that we have here in terms of photography skills, editing skills. They are really like long commercials, so to speak, and although we are a film festival we have been shying away from doing a category for TV ads because we are a film festival and not a commercial. So, we were looking for creativity so this year we decided to work with this new category and we have been looking at it because there are several festivals that do this category.”

There are two more categories that will not be included in the competition and those are the Green Globe environmental awareness and animation categories.
