Opposition Leader says It’s About Getting It Right

John Briceño

P.U.P. Leader John Briceño also countered the Prime Minister’s accusation that the opposition is purposely delaying the holding of the referendum.  Briceño says that his party has the moral and legal obligation to the country to ensure that this process is done properly.

John Briceño, Leader, People’s United Party

“We are not deliberately delaying anything.  As the opposition where we are representing over sixty seven thousand voters from the last election. We have a  moral and legal responsibility to these people and to everybody to ensure that we get this right. We have waited more than a hundred plus years since 1859. Why can’t we wait a few more months I believe we can get it right. I believe that a lot of people want more time because they are afraid to make the wrong decision. They are being pulled by one side and the other side. They need a breather so that they can really sit down and get the information rationally and make the right decision. The level of anxiety is increasing because they feel like the government is pressuring them. ‘We have to make a decision. We have to make a decision.’ Why? Why was April tenth a magic number? Guatemala changed their referendum three times so that they can ensure that they could get it right. We need to do the same thing. If Guatemala could have done that, why can’t we. After all, Guatemala is not better than us.”
