Robbers Hit Homever Supermarket

While the Eastern Division jurisdiction for the Police Department has been relatively quiet as it relates to major crimes, petty crimes such as robberies and burglaries have spiked. A well-known supermarket in the Ladyville area is the latest to be hit by thieves. Early this morning just as the owner and his employee were opening the store, four thieves pounced into them. The owner was held at gunpoint and the female employee was injured as the men rummaged the business and escaped with cash. But freedom was brief for two of the suspects as alert cops moved quickly to apprehend them. At news time, police have also confiscated the getaway vehicle. Duane Moody reports.

Just after seven this morning, thieves broke into Homever Supermarket at mile fourteen on the Philip Goldson Highway, located just outside the Los Lagos Community. The store was just about to open when four armed men, three wearing rags over their faces, gained access and proceeded to ransack to the store, stealing everything they could from behind the burglar barred counter. Surveillance footage captured the entire incident and the face of at least one of the culprits was clearly seen. The Chinese businessman and his employee could not have done anything to avert the crime. News Five has also been told that the owner’s firearm was stolen.

“Upon police visiting that supermarket, they were informed that the proprietor was held at gun point by four male persons; three of them wearing masks and one of them was barefaced. During the robbery, a total of two thousand dollars cash and two cell phones.”

We are told that they also assaulted or knocked the woman over the head?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“Just a minor injury.”

“I know it happened early in the morning. Is it like an ambush where she was opening the store and then they jumped…”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“The store was being opened.”

While the female employee sustained minor injuries when she was assaulted, police have since been able to detain two persons in connection with the crime.

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“Police conducted an investigation and at this point two persons were detained and the suspected getaway vehicle is presently being sought by police.”

“I understand that the vehicle used is linked to a known person—not law enforcement—a known person in Ladyville. Has this suspect been detained?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“Two persons were detained that are from Belize City and presently a search is being conducted at the residence of a male person in Ladyville where we suspect the vehicle is.”

Police were unable to confirm whether the loot was recovered. Duane Moody for News Five.
