Belizean Remains Locked Up in US on $500K Bond

Jermaine Belgrave

Thirty-six-year-old Belizean Jermaine Belgrave remains incarcerated in the U.S. Reports from Erie County in Pennsylvania suggest that Belgrave’s possible long criminal history and gang affiliation here in Belize was factored in a judge’s decision. Belgrave made a request to reduce his bond to ten percent of one hundred thousand U.S. dollars. The sitting judge denied the request, stating that Belgrave is considered a flight risk and possibly a danger to the community. Belgrave is believed to be affiliated with the Bloods, a major street gang and is said to have twenty-three prior convictions for offenses including assault in Belize. He is reportedly wanted here on a bench warrant for a robbery. Belgrave participated in a February shootout outside the Marriott Hotel on Erie’s bay front and remains on a five hundred thousand U.S.-dollar bond while he awaits prosecution.

Charles Baizar

Police there have also charged another Belizean, thirty-five-year-old Charles Baizar, for selling a kilo of heroin for eighty thousand dollars on February seventh. Police say that when the suspected purchasers arrived at the location, Baizar and another man approached their vehicle, but were fired upon. Baizar was shot in the foot. Belgrave is accused of shooting back before he was struck in the chest. Several other people believed to have been involved in the incident remain at large.
