Family Claims Negligence at K.H.M.H. Led to Arm Amputation

Theresita Chan

The family of fifty-eight-year-old Theresita Chan is claiming that negligence at the K.H.M.H. has led to the amputation of one of her arms. Today, Chan’s son Thomas Garcia stopped by News Five to tell his story because he says that K.H.M.H. is trying to put the blame on an old, unrelated health issue. He says that his mother visited a doctor around the twenty-first of February and was referred to the K.H.M.H.  He alleges that the doctor at K.H.M.H. didn’t properly attend to his mother which led to an infection in one of her arms which resulted in the amputation last week. He says they are desperate for some answers because the KHMH was dismissive during their meeting. He explains what happened.

“She explained to the doctor what Doctor Eck said to please check her hand because the vein look kinda lee swell this and that.  So, she took her and all the doctor did was to band up her hand and say that it was okay and that it nuh have to go through nothing and thing. And they send home my ma. When my ma get home my sister gone check on her when she mi di rest in the sofa and my ma she collapse because she di bleed weh inna the sofa, mess up the sofa.  My sista back down my ma and get a wah vehicle and ker her dah K.H.M.H. when they get deh they had to give ah four bag of blood.   So they ker ah upstairs and one of the doctors tape up her hand and when they took off the tape, they took off her whole skin due to the tape. For a lee while they left ah like that because she was in the hospital for a lee while and thing. They called me wah Sunday, last week Sunday. They called my sista and say they have to cut my ma hand because it infected and thing. But before that, because she mi come out we ker my ma dah Chetumal and the doctors over there told her that either her hand or her life because the doctors they nuh tell ah how ih get infected and they need to deal with that. So, all the while they have ah deh and the try cover it up and wash it out due to the thing weh they mi put ah pahn.  So they had a meeting with my sista inna the board with the doctor and thing. The doctor brought up about six years my mom’s kidney had already collapsed. So, my sister told them that this is not a six year thing, this is just last week when I bring my ma with her hand and thing. This dah nuh no six years thing.”

“So, you’re saying that the K.H.M.H. didn’t treat your mother with the seriousness?”

Thomas Garcia

“Correct. It’s their negligence because if my sister go deh and explain weh Doctor Eck say then at least to say let’s check to see what is happening because dis dah emergency. If they mi check my ma vein and thing good, she nuh mi wah have lose her hand.”

Today, we reached out to the hospital’s PR Department for a comment and they responded to say that there is an ongoing investigation into this complaint and so they can’t comment further on the case. We’ll keep following the story.
