ComPol Concludes National Tour in Belize City

Commissioner Chester Williams concluded a countrywide tour of the police department in Belize City this morning where he met with officers of all ranks to discuss their wellbeing as men and women of law enforcement.  Coming out of that session is a dire need for a recruitment of additional officers since there are emerging and expanding communities that require more boots on the ground.  It’s a serious concern since the existing complement of officers is stretched thin.  ComPol Williams discusses the likelihood of a 2019 intake.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“Our major issue is the human resource.  We are currently short, you know the demand for policing has expanded.  We have several communities that have expanded, like Buena Vista, you have Hopkins, Placencia, Roaring Creek and because of the expansion of those areas it took away from the policing of the main district towns and so you find that officers are complaining that sometimes they feel overworked due to the fact that they are required to come back and do extra by evening time to be able to contain the crime problem and so that’s an issue we are looking at and we will be asking the government for a recruit squad this year and once that recruit squad is given to us then that should be able to alleviate those issues as it relates to overwork.  But for the most part I can say that the working hours for the officers are well within the scope of the law.  The police does give the Commissioner of Police the authority to work police officers extra in emergency situations and I don’t think that we are at an emergency state for us to be working officers extra hours.  So getting the additional manpower would be significant to ensuring that we work within the legal requirements of the law.”
