A Suggestion on the Use of Police Association Funds

Chester Williams

So what becomes of the monies that the Police Association has been collecting from its membership over the years?  Officers often fall sick and, in some cases, pass away without receiving financial assistance from the department.  ComPol Williams has suggested that those funds be offered as grants to paying members of the association to help in covering the cost of medical expenses during times of illness.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“In terms of welfare, you would know that the officers are concerned about monies that they have paid to the police association over the past years and they were asking me what is being done to ensure that there is accountability for the monies that they have paid and my answer to them is that the money is before the court and we’ll wait to see what the court ruling is going to be.  But again, I maintain that as the Commissioner of Police, I do have a fiduciary to ensure that the interest of every member of the police department is looked after and importantly that there is accountability for the officers monies that they have paid to the association or any other funds.  One of the suggestions that I made to them, you all would know that we have a number of officers who have fallen ill and some cases they died.  My thing is that we don’t have to be like this and the things that I would like to work on with the police association to be able to enhance the welfare of our officers, especially where their health is concerned.”
