Opposition Leader Bashes PM; Defends Judiciary over Recent Rulings

John Briceño

Opposition Leader John Briceño this evening released a prerecorded video statement responding to the ruling of the Court of Appeal and remarks made by Prime Minister Dean Barrow following that ruling. Briceño did not touch on his recent letter to P.M. Barrow, but rejected statements that the PM attributed to him while defending the judiciary against Barrow’s verbal attacks.

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“We regard the recent judgments in the courts as victories by the people of Belize and not as a victory for the Opposition. We hold sacred the right of Belizeans to vote in a referendum to decide whether we go to the I.C.J.  We also stand firm to our sacred duty to ensure that Belize is on the strongest legal footing if we go to the I.C.J.  I am seriously concerned about comments by the Prime Minister during his press conference yesterday. He attributed comments to me that was totally untrue. He also blamed the Opposition for the judgment and at times he openly attacked the Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin for his decision to grant an interim injunction which effectively puts the referendum on hold. We are of the view that the Prime Minister should not so openly criticized the Chief Justice and so blatantly attack the judiciary. I have said again and again that we have to get it right. We all agreed that this is an issue of national important and as such we should be addressing it not as P.U.P. or U.D.P. but as Belizeans.”

This evening the United Democratic Party issued a release, stating that the P.U.P. has “officially embarked on a malicious, unconditional campaign to block the democratic right of Belizeans.” In its release, the U.D.P. denounces what it says is the P.U.P.’s zealous campaign to take away the constitutional right of Belizeans. They say that the latest set of court cases was nothing more than a malicious, calculated move by the P.U.P.—to ensure that democracy would be delayed.
