U.D.P. Stalwarts Ready to Go to the Polls

Michael Peyrefitte

According to AG Peyrefitte, the membership of the United Democratic Party has been expressing its readiness to go to the polls.  Of course, this was prior to the Court of Appeal’s decision late this evening.  While he did not comment on the controversy surrounding Belizeans in Diaspora, Peyrefitte spoke on those U.D.P. stalwarts who returned home to participate in the referendum.

Michael Peyrefitte, Attorney General

“Our people are telling us that they are ready for a referendum on April tenth.  The people have said, even those who may want to vote have said, “I want my chance to vote.”  So what we are fighting for is for people to have their right to vote however they want to vote in the referendum.  If it has to be pushed back it has to be pushed back but there are people who have traveled, regular citizens of Belize who have traveled from abroad to be here for April tenth.  The people have gone through considerable expense to be here, so they want their opportunity to vote April tenth and I think that it would be irresponsible of the government to not fight for the date that it has set and it has made people expect that it would be the date you’d have the referendum.  We have to fight for April tenth as hard as we can and if the court decides otherwise then we’ll just have to go in a different direction.  We have to make the people know that we consider the inconvenience that they have gone through in order to vote on April tenth and we want to respect that and have that vote on April tenth.”
