Beat Down Leaves Man in Critical Condition

Elton Baiza

A Belize City construction worker is in a critical condition after he was brutally beaten in Crooked Tree Village over the weekend. According to Elton Baiza’s family, he went to Crooked Tree for work and on Saturday night he was socializing during festivities in the village. But sometime between one and four-thirty on Sunday morning, he was attacked. He suffered massive injuries to the head and is now in a coma at the K.H.M.H.  His family says they have more questions than answers and would like for eye witnesses to come forward with information on the attackers.  News Five’s Andrea Polanco reports.

Twenty-seven-year-old Elton Baiza was brutally beaten in Crooked Tree Village in the early hours of Sunday morning. His sister says that he is now hospitalized in a critical condition suffering from brain damage.

Nicole Figueroa, Sister

“He currently goes to Crooked Tree every other weekend due to work. I won’t say my brother is a saint but at the end of the day my brother won’t do anything to anybody if you don’t fool with him. To let someone beat him that horribly and in his head only is hard to recover from. His body is ok. It is just his head. His brains got hit. He is unconscious. So he might not remember his name, us, or anything. We will have to teach him all over again like a baby and that is something hard for me to face.”

Baiza’s head was bashed in and he was left for dead somewhere in the village. A Good Samaritan picked him up and his family says that good deed may have just saved his life. Figueroa says that her brother was drinking that night and she believes that his attacker or attackers took advantage of him. At this time, the family has received conflicting reports about what may have led to the brutal beat down.

Nicole Figueroa

“I am very thankful for the lady who saved my brother. If it wasn’t for her, I would be looking at my brother very differently.”

Andrea Polanco

“What have you heard about what happened?”

“We are hearing all kinds of stuff about a girl. We are hearing that he got knocked down. We are hearing that he got beaten up by more than three persons. We are hearing that there was an argument in the club. We are hearing multiple things and every time the story comes, it comes differently. So, I really don’t know what to believe.”

Baiza’s mom, Lesa Baiza, says she believes the brutal attack on her only son was witnessed by several persons. She is asking those persons to come forward with information to identify the perpetrators of this crime.

“It hurts me so bad to see my son in that condition and I know he wasn’t sick. I talked to ah this morning when I gone there and my son actually cried and it pains me. It hurts me bad. He is my only son that I have.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, right now you are just hoping that he recovers?”

Lesa Baiza

“Yes. I am just hoping that he recovers because anything happen to my son I don’t know how I will take it.”

Andrea Polanco

“Would you like to say something to the people out there who may have seen something or say something?”

Lesa Baiza

“I just hope somebody would come forward to say what they saw and who did it. That is all.”

Andrea Polanco

“Do you believe other people saw what happened?”

Lesa Baiza

“I know people see what happen. And I know people who know my son saw what happened. I know.”

While the family fears that Elton Baiza’s life will not be the same because of this beat down, they are remaining hopeful because doctors have recorded small signs of recovery. Reporting for News Five, I’m Andrea Polanco.
