Attorney General Accuses P.U.P. of Delay Tactics

Michael Peyrefitte

The Opposition Party has until Saturday evening to file skeletal arguments after which the hearing will be held on Monday. For the government, it is a race against time and Peyrefitte is accusing the P.U.P. of purposely delaying the legal proceedings.

Michael Peyrefitte, Attorney General

“The People’s United Party does not want this matter to be heard and determined by the Court of Appeal. All they are doing right now is delay, delay, delay in the hope that the clock will run out before April tenth. If you are so confident in your case and you are so confident about your position then why not hear the matter now but they refuse to hear the matter now but they refuse to hear the matter now, they even refuse to acknowledge that they would be willing to hear the matter now. The Court of Appeal offered to sit down tomorrow if the parties were prepared, today of the parties are prepared. By law the only they can’t sit down is Sunday. But they were prepared to sit-down any time we wished provided that the two sides could agree. We were prepared to sit down right now, today, this morning.”

Hipolito Novelo

“Sir did the Court of Appeal indicated that they will be handing down a ruling on the same day or the next?”

Michael Peyrefitte

“That’s up to them but the Court of Appeal certainly appreciates the urgency of the matter and I am confident that once we get through all the arguments on Monday they will make a decision on way or the other. The Court of Appeal will be here on Monday morning to hear both arguments at the same time; the notice of motion for an expedited hearing and as well the substantive appeal on the injunction.”

“And you are confident that all  that is going to happen before the tenth?”

Michael Peyrefitte

“Well Monday is before the tenth.”

Reporter

“ No but…”

Hipolito Novelo

“In terms of ruling.”

Michael Peyrefitte

“I am hoping but it is up to the Court of Appeal. They can decide to rule whenever they decide.”

Reporter

“The remedy that the Government is seeking is to squash the injunction.”

Michael Peyrefitte

“We want the injunction lifted so the people of Belize whether or not they want to go to the I.C.J. on April tenth.”

Reporter

“And what about the writ of referendum that the CJ has some issue with?”

Michael Peyrefitte

“He didn’t say he has an issue with it. He said that it is something very serious to be considered. The only thing is the injunction. He has not said that the writs are not valid. All the writs are valid until April tenth. So we want to make sure that we can have this referendum on April tenth.”
