Official Details on Home Invasion at Sapphire Resort

On Tuesday around one-thirty a.m., two Canadian guests at Sapphire Resort located nine and a half miles north of Ambergris Caye were targeted by thieves. Joseph and Marilyn Troiano were the only guests at the resort at the time when three men and a woman, wearing rags over their faces and carrying a gun and a knife, held them up. The robbers first targeted the resort’s security guard and tied him up inside an incomplete structure on the compound before they carried out the assault of the couple. The restaurant was also burglarized before the thieves escaped on a motorcycle and a golf cart, which they abandoned. ASP Alejandro Cowo shares official details on the incident.

“Mister Wani Augustine, twenty-nine years Belizean security guard, inside an unfinished house; handcuffed to the back. He was seen with injuries to the head. He was assisted by police and there after they made checks inside a concrete structure where they observed two Canadian nationals, Mister Joseph Troiano and Marilyn Troiano, fifty-eight and fifty-three years old, where Mister Troiano was observed with injuries to his body which were minor. What police gathered so far is that the security guard was working at the resort when he was approached by four persons—three males and a female who were dressed in all black and were covering their faces with rags. They subdued the security guard and took him inside one of the unfinished building. Thereafter they burglarized the restaurant and stole a small amount of cash. They then opened the room where Mister Joseph and Marilyn were sleeping. A small amount of cash was stolen from them and then the four persons left on a golf cart and a motorcycle that belonged to the resort and the golf cart was a rental from one of the companies in San Pedro. Police recovered the golf cart on Barrier Reef Drive and the motorcycle six miles north on San Pedro. So far nobody has been detained for this incident.”
