Sanjay Pilgrim is Acquitted of the Murder of his Friend

Sanjay Pilgrim

After two weeks in trial, the case against undertaker Sanjay Pilgrim, accused of the stabbing murder of his friend, Carrington Bodden, concluded before Justice Colin Williams. Bodden was killed in June 2015 on Freetown Road, Belize City. In the trial by judge without jury, Pilgrim was acquitted.  Justice Williams rejected all three confessions which were the only pieces of evidence that the crown, represented by Shanice Lovell, was relying on. The crown’s main witness failed to help establish a case against Pilgrim. Pilgrim’s defence counsel, Stevannie Duncan, made a submission to acquit him of murder which was accepted and he was free to go. Bodden was stabbed once to his chest after a day of partying and drinking with friends. But in the evidence which unfolded, there was little to prove the nexus between the deceased and the accused. Pilgrim also told the court that he had been forced by the police to give a statement taking responsibility for the murder. Pilgrim also testified that he was at home and nowhere at the murder scene and that he was beaten by police to admit to the murder.
