Special Olympics Fun Run to Be Held

The Special Olympics annual fun run is scheduled to take place this coming Saturday. The event will be held countrywide to “foster active infusion and participation of all regardless of their abilities”. The fun run has been held for many years and according to Candice Morrison, the event has seen more involvement from the public. Morrison says that having the participation of the wider public assures persons with intellectual disabilities that they have the support of others.

“The Fun Run is an advocacy and awareness campaign and it promotes the inclusion of children and persons with intellectual disabilities in our nation. Inclusion is very important to us because it gives the kids, the children, and persons with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to relate to others, to experience joy and satisfaction in being able to participate in physical events. We are asking persons without intellectual disabilities to come out and advocate on their behalf. So it is not only for people with intellectual disabilities so the minute you come out there you become an advocate for persons who are experiencing intellectual disabilities.”

The fun run is expected to start at six a.m. countrywide. In Belize City, the group will take off from Stella Maris. In Punta Gorda, Orange Walk and Corozal the run starts at the central parks and in Belmopan and Dangriga, the run begins at the George Price Ring Road and B.T.L. Park respectively.
