N.G.O. Community and Senators Step Up for Lisa Shoman

Cyber bullying and threat of violence are not limited to the viral release of pornographic material on social media.  It has also taken root online in the buildup towards the I.C.J. referendum on April tenth.  The latest target of such offense is Senior Counsel Lisa Shoman, the attorney representing the Government of Belize in a legal challenge before the Supreme Court, where the People’s United Party is seeking an injunction against the holding of the national vote.  The online attack has prompted the social sector senators, as well as the Belize Network of N.G.O.s to come forward and denounce the unsolicited intimidation.  In a release issued earlier, senators Mark Lizarraga, Ashley Rocke, Elena Smith and Osmany Salas are, “calling for respect and tolerance for all in Belize irrespective of their personal positions on any matter.  The current divisive climate in our country is becoming more pronounced and the invective unfortunately even worse so.” We note that former Foreign Minister Shoman maintains a firm presence on social media where she has expressed her opinions on matters relating to the Belize/Guatemala territorial dispute and other social and national issues quite openly.
