12 Guatemalans Are Detained, but Later Released in the South

Police normally report about drug busts, small or big, contraband beer and the sorts, but tonight, they are tight-lipped about an incident in the south.  Since Friday, there have been persistent reports that a vessel was intercepted with a significant amount of cash, forty thousand U.S. dollars. Images were obtained of the bundles of cold cash and posted on social media. But today, police would offer no comment on the incident.  Coast Guard Vice Commandant Elton Bennett, however, spoke to News Five confirming that twelve men were detained onboard the Guatemalan vessel on Friday.  They were stopped and boarded in the area of Moho River by personnel from the Belize Coast Guard.  The individuals were escorted to the Punta Gorda Police Station where the cash was counted, adding up to forty thousand U.S. dollars, along with more than two thousand quetzals. The detainees were also found with eleven mobile phones. According to Vice Commandant Bennett and National Security C.E.O. Felix Enriquez, the men were heading to Punta Gorda to transact legitimate business, but they were intercepted before they were able to dock and declare the money.  They also confirmed that the men were all released, along with the money and the vessel.
