Fishing Trip Turns Deadly among Relatives

Levan Lewis

Another person lost his life over the weekend and police are looking at it as a death investigation.  A fishing trip turned deadly on Sunday when one cousin punched another and he fell and hit his head. The Eight Miles resident never regained consciousness and died about an hour later at the K.H.M.H.  Police say that the man who landed the blow has turned himself in and the file will be forwarded to the D.P.P. to determine charges.  Reporter Andrea Polanco tells us more.

What should have been a fun day of fishing with his relatives ended in death for forty-two-year-old Levan Lewis. Lewis left his home around midday on Sunday to go fishing in these ponds at mile twelve off the George Price Highway. And by the time his girlfriend Sharon Leslie heard about him again after five that evening – it was because he was unconscious and fighting for his life. Leslie says she has heard different versions of what happened near the ponds that evening and she doesn’t know what to believe.

Voice of: Sharon Leslie, Girlfriend of the Deceased

“It was after five when I heard that they were rushing him down and he is not responding. At that point I heard that he was punched out of a truck. I also heard that he fell out of a truck. I also heard that he hit somebody and they punched him and he hit his head on the bumper and passed out and they rushed him down.”

Lewis’s mother Marie Lewis is holding on to the version that it was fight between two relatives, her son and his cousin, who were drinking.

“They were all drinking and things, this young man, his own cousin he gone and tek up dinner fi the children them. They gone and eat and he tell the young man something. I nuh know if he hit the young man or what but the young man hit him directly to the temple. I say that dah his temple because he drop very heavy on the back of the vehicle.   You know when man and everybody drink they just argue and thing. I nuh think the young man had right fi hit him in the head. Even if they had an argument or something, they shouldn’t have knocked him so hard because he got a heavy blow.”

Police are also going with that version.

Alejandro Cowo

ASP Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B., Belize City

“They stated that they were having a fishing party somewhere between twelve and thirteen miles on the George Price Highway when an argument ensued between the deceased and another family member, where one of the family members punched Mr. Levan Lewis causing him to lose balance and hit his head on the bumper of a vehicle that was parked while they were at the pond fishing.”

But it is still tough for Leslie to reconcile with what happened. She says that while the men were relatives and got along for the most part – there is a history of feud between the two families.

Andrea Polanco

“Do you know if he and any of those persons who were back there had a history of violence or a history of problems? Disputes – did he have any?”

Voice of: Sharon Leslie

“I wouldn’t say because they are all cousins; they are all related. But from what I have known, there is a tension between that group of the family with them. I am going to say it out – the Fabers and the Lewis. I know that they have an ongoing thing but yet they remain talking to each other and stuff.  The crowd that he was with he normally nuh go with them.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, I imagine you were very surprise to hear this happened at a family function?”

Voice of: Sharon Leslie

“Yes. Very surprised because at the end of the day they are all cousins. Everybody that was there is related. And from what I understand, it seems that he is the only one that was drunk. And if he was the only one that was drunk – then what happened with the ones that were sober? That allowed that. That stood there.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, you think that perhaps they took advantage of him?”

Voice of: Sharon Leslie

“Yes.”

Lewis’s mother says that she isn’t putting blame on anyone.

Marie Lewis

“I don’t blame anybody and I hope and pray that this killing and chopping up would stop. I left it to the sisters deh fi how they hear it and get it. I would really want the grand-mother because that boy’s mother died. I would want the grand-mother to come and talk to me. I would want the lee bwai come and talk to me.”

Police say that the relative who punched Lewis has turned himself in to the authorities.

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“We have spoken to several family members. Statements have been recorded. I know that the person that was involved in this incident just turned himself into the police. And he is being interviewed at this moment. Likewise, like the first incident, we are putting the file together and will be forwarding that to the D.P.P. for them to advise us as to how to proceed.”

Reporter

“Is the nature of the dispute known?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“Well, it was just a dispute out of nothing. Because one of the persons was suspected to be drinking so something ensued between them.”

Reporter

“Sir, do you know whether they have any prior dispute?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“No.”
