Bishop Martin School Board Agrees to Hire ‘Emergency Teachers’

The Board of Trustees at Bishop Martin High School has decided to hire ‘emergency teachers’ in order to normalize the school’s operations. In the past two weeks, classes were disrupted after four teachers were forced to speak out against what they say is a complete neglect of their concerns by the board and the Principal. The teachers, Manuel Tzul, Carmen Trejo, Avid Briceño and Emil Quetzal had been illegally employed at the school for years. They thought that the administration had forwarded their documents to the Teaching Services Commission for it to be approved and have their appointment in order. That was not done and the teachers were forced to turn to the B.N.T.U., the ministry and the public. After meeting with the ministry on Friday, the board decided that it would hire four teachers on an emergency basis for ninety days while the documents of the teachers in question continue to be processed. Board Member Suzannie Cajun provided us an update.

“We would just request to the TSC emergency teachers and in this case we need four emergency teachers and we will be hiring temporarily. Mind you that while we are doing this we still have to continue with the actual process which should have been done from the very beginning which the board has already started. We have posted the four positions out and we are inviting applicants for the teaching positions.”

“How soon will these four teachers be retained by the school in terms of the emergency clause?”

“The HR Committee from the board will be meeting tonight and they will be drafting out a letter, requesting emergency teacher from the TSC. This letter should be going out tomorrow and the TSC will be meeting and revising our request. We should be receiving a reply within a week or two.”

“So just to be clear, the position for these emergency teacher, will do to these specific four teachers?”

On the Phone: Suzannie Cajun

“Well I am not quite certain. I cannot comment on that at t his point but we are trying to get four teachers temporarily employed so we can continue with our normal day to day operations at the school.”

According to Cajun, the four teachers in question will be considered for the post.
