Less Money for Judiciary, More Money for AG’s Ministry

Kareem Musa

The judiciary has seen a considerable chunk of its annual budget being slashed in the upcoming financial year.  In contrast, additional allocations are being made for the Attorney General’s ministry, despite a very poor record of winning major cases in court.  It’s a point that was highlighted by Caribbean Shores Area Rep Kareem Musa who compared the thirty percent success rate against the extra funding the AG’s Office will be receiving going forward.

“When it comes to the Attorney General’s ministry they are acknowledging and celebrating their failure once again.  In this budget book, they confirm that they have only been winning thirty percent of all their cases.  You imagine if any one of our children were to come home with a thirty percent grade.  What is that?  Seventy percent of cases are being won against the Government of Belize.  That is atrocious.  That is dismal.  That is unacceptable.  And you may think, Mr. Speaker, that this thirty percent that they are winning, you would think that it is inconsequential and irrelevant cases, but let us take a look because I think it’s the member for Lake-I who brought it up about land acquisition and compensation.”
