Mother charged with child abandonment

A woman from Stann Creek has been charged with child abandonment after her children were found suffering from extreme malnutrition. According to police, Human Development Officer Anthony Lino, went to the home of Dangriga resident Victor Martinez where he saw three children with open cuts, scratches and wearing extremely soiled clothing. The human development officer has reported that in addition to that description, all three children were suffering from extreme malnutrition. Investigations by the officer revealed that the children had been with Martinez since the end of March this year. Apparently, Martinez was previously involved with the mother of the children, identified as forty-two year old Alicia Trejo. News 5 understands that Trejo has only recently returned from Salvador and was living in Cow Pen Village in the Stann Creek District. So far, Alicia Trejo has been charged with child abandonment, but as investigations continue it is likely additional charges will be levied against her and Victor Martinez. The children are now in the custody of Human Services.
