Broccoli & Cauliflower to be Imported

The Ministry of Agriculture says the importation of a quantity of broccoli and cauliflower will be allowed later this month through the Belize Marketing and Development Corporation. According to a release, this is because production of the seasonal vegetables is at fifty percent at this time of the year.  The weekly demand for cauliflower is eight thousand pounds which means that some four thousand pounds will be imported weekly until the situation normalizes. In respect of broccoli, six thousand pounds are required locally so that three thousand pounds will be allowed into the market. The release states that BMDC will prioritize and coordinate the marketing of local production and only make provisions to import the difference to meet the entire local demand.  The Ministry took flak recently when local potato and soy bean farmers complained about the importation of both items put them at risk by creating a glut in the local market.
