Corozal Family Disputes a Police Account of a Cocaine Bust

Joseph Myvett

A well-known courier service provider from Corozal and a cargo agent for a local airline company are on Supreme Court bail tonight after they were intercepted by police last Wednesday with three kilos of cocaine. Fifty-nine-year-old Henry Menzies and thirty-eight-year-old Melvin Cal were nabbed after three p.m. by officers who were at the Ranchito Municipal Airstrip and saw an exchange between Cal and Menzies, who was driving a taxi van. Menzies was intercepted and inside a knapsack, police discovered three parcels of suspected cocaine hidden within folded short pants. The parcels had a combined weight of just under seven pounds of suspected cocaine. Even though the men have been charged for the crime of drug trafficking, Menzies, his family and the courier company, which he has managed for forty years, say that he was falsely arrested and charged. They say that their services were called upon and Menzies responded to pick up and deliver the package to the wife of one of their long-standing clients in Corozal. He had no knowledge of the content of package.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“Sometime around three-thirty p.m., police officers on patrol in the area of the Corozal airstrip observe a male person with a knapsack and in the presence of the police who was a short distance away, that knapsack was handed over to a taxi driver. The police officers then intercepted this person where a search was conducted on the knapsack which revealed three parcels of suspected cocaine with a total combined weight of three thousand one hundred and forty-six grams.”

“The family of Henry Menzies has put up a family statement saying that in fact it is a negligent investigation because Mister Menzies was simply a courier who was hired—as he has done many times—to pick up a package at the airstrip and make a deliver. That he is blameless; his job is to pick up things.”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“Yeah, but the police investigation as they were on operation has indicated differently hence the reason why both persons have been charged.”
