Sprucing Up Cleopatra White, Unicomer Style

A team of painters, all employees of Unicomer Belize, has been working diligently to give Cleopatra White Polyclinic a much needed facelift.  It is part of their annual celebration of Unicomer Volunteer Week.  News Five stopped by the health center today and saw the team in action.

For the past several days, employees of Unicomer, the parent company for Courts and Tropigas, have been busy donating their time and effort to spruce up the Cleopatra White Polyclinic in Belize City.  It’s part of their annual corporate citizenship initiative to give back to the community.  This year, the electronics and appliance giant teamed up with the Ministry of Health to brighten things up at the health center.

“Every March, we celebrate what is Unicomer Volunteer Week.  So all the Unicomer companies that operate in these twenty-four countries in the Caribbean, Central America, South America, including Belize, we celebrate what is Unicomer Volunteer Week.  As a corporate company we try to emphasize or try to advocate for voluntary work which means that we have our staff, we have over two hundred [members of] staff at Unicomer Belize.  So what we try to do is come up with creative projects so that we can have our staff come up with either one hour of their lunch time or free time from work to give back to the community.  The past two years we‘ve been partnering with Helpage targeting the elderly.  So for this year, we wanted to target more kids and become more eco-friendly in that aspect.  So what we did is that we partnered with the Ministry of Health and of course we have Courts stores countrywide in each district.  So every Courts store had to partner up with their local hospital and what they did was two things.  We renovated the kids ward and the second one was that we provided new books into a bookshelf.”

According to administrator Owen Vellos, the partnership is aimed at improving the overall experience for patients, particularly children, and parents accompanying them.

“They contacted me about two weeks ago, they came to evaluate the clinic and they decided that being every year they decided to help assist the community.  So this year they decided to facilitate the Ministry of Health through the Cleopatra White.  So as you can see, they‘ve been painting since last week Saturday and Sunday and then today.”

“I understand that there was an assessment done prior to this particular project getting underway.  Can you speak to us on what needed to have been touched up and so forth?”

Owen Vellos

“Well the clinic needed a brighter environment so we decided to go with a brighter green.  It was darker but we decided that we wanted a little more baby friendly, a little more patient friendly, you know, to attract more patients, being that they are sick already.  We want them to feel healthier and more comfortable inside the clinic.”
