Bush fire spreads to Xtra House Compound

Shortly after five on Thursday evening, a fire broke out inside the Extra House compound on the George Price Highway. Fire officials say that the blaze didn’t destroy any of the buildings, but it destroyed five old cars and a couple storage containers. The National Fire Service was alerted of the fire at Mile Two behind the Extra House warehouse and learnt that it all started from a small bush fire.  The fire-fighting lasted until eight in the night. Here’s what Station Manager Orin Smith told us about the fire.

Orin Smith, Station Officer, National Fire Service

Orin Smith

“On arrival on the scene, fond was a large fire burning on the south east of the property. The units went into operation and the fire was later extinguished. It was learnt that that fire was the result of a bush fire that occurred further east of the property from an open lot. That fire burned its way on to the Xtra House property and ignited some garbage that they had on the side and burned eight unserviceable stationary units, among which were five vehicles and three storage containers. The fire also threatened a private service station that provides fuel for the Xtra House fleet of vehicles. Since the incident, the health department, fire department and the department of environment had visited today and spoke with the person in charge of the Xtra House compound.”

Smith says the fuel was properly secured and stored, so the flames didn’t reach it.
