House Collapses with Family of 3

A family of three is staying with relatives and friends tonight after the place they’ve called home for decades collapsed with them inside. The incident occurred just after six o’clock this morning on Marigold Lane in Belize City. The Flowers family is now seeking assistance from the public to rebuild.  News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

This morning, a wooden house on Marigold Lane in the Saint Martin De Porres area, collapsed with three persons inside. Nevin Flowers says that they were inside their home along with his mother when the structure caved in. It was a frightening experience, which the couple says they anticipated would have happened due to the deteriorating condition of the house.

“This morning, he was using the bathroom, getting ready to go to work. Well I hear wah lee creak, but I wasn’t paying it no mind and he come ina di room and tell me well babe, the house di drop. And by the time we reach ina di hall, the house just crumble down; the whole back slide to the back. I tell he we can’t go through the front, so we go through the window. My boyfriend live there all fi he life, I di live deh two years with him. We just need assistance because the house really old and ih really cave in. We had to jump through the window on top of a vehicle and dah soh cause the whole thing lean to the back.”


Nevin Flowers, Homeowner

“All the footing underneath it gone. All the footing gone and ih just come down pan… I was starting to build in the back cause I done know I couldn’t save it, but I mi di try hurry, but I neva had enough time. Unfortunately it caught up with me and drop before I finish.”


The couple says that while they will be seeking shelter with family and friends in the interim, they would like assistance to complete the construction of a house to the back of the yard.

“We noh di ask fi no food or nothing. We just di ask fi assistance from the minister and thing. We noh really know a lotta people; my boyfriend dah noh wah person weh out there. We just di ask fi wah lee assistance. We have a lee thing di try build up dah back, but we need assistance. We need somewhere to stay, we need somewhere fi live in. Today we just wah take off the day, try find wah room and move some of the things in there. But by the end of the day, we wah see weh wah happen.”

“Family member will help for us to stay at them and thing, but we just want the house. We want a house so we can stay ina, live ina. Mi mother-in-law get the worse of it weh fi she room deh dah way dah back ah weh di kitchen deh and dah di whole ah di back of the kitchen come down. So when she climb out the window this morning, fi she lee heart…I neva yet see wah lady so frighten. Ih eye open up so big and ih di shake di come through the window. We need assistance.”
