Renewed Focus on Women’s Football

The Federation is also promoting the inclusion of women in the sport. It’s a big push being made by FIFA across the globe and Belize is no exception. With the team of Shane Orio and Iris Centeno, there are several tournaments for female athletes. Communications and Marketing Director at F.F.B., Yashmin Juan told the media today that they are teaming up with several N.G.O.s and the Special Envoy for Women and Children to boost the initiative.

“Two weeks ago, we kicked off the National Amateur Women’s League with twelve teams from throughout the country of Belize. We actually have a team from San Pedro participating. So this year, we took on a new approach when it comes to the National Amateur Women’s League in that we are trying to use football as a platform for advocacy. So we are trying to push football for it to be known that it is more than a game and we are using it to promote social issues that women are facing. To do this, we are partnering with the Cancer Society, the YWCA and with Miss Kim Simplis Barrow from the Special Envoy. We want it to be known that it is more than just football; it is more than just a sport. Yes, women can play the sport just as good as men so we are promoting and pushing women’s football a lot in the federation.”
